Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I-Brooklyn, Staten Island) today announced that she has been asked to speak at Duke University’s spring Connect2Politics series, part of the Hart Leadership Program. The University brings four elected officials under 40 that they consider “rising stars” to campus for a Speakers’ Series on government and leadership. This year’s participants also include South Bend (Ind.) Mayor Pete Buttigieg, San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro. According to Alma Blount, director of the Hart Leadership Program, each politician was selected as part of their effort to ‘interact with young politicians at the state and municipal levels, because many of them are stepping up to tackle issues Washington has left unsolved.’

“It is a tremendous honor to have been selected to participate in this series and be noted alongside truly dynamic elected officials from around the nation who are helping shape their communities,” said Malliotakis. “As a life-long resident of New York City, I’m excited to share in the discussion about the important steps our state government has taken to tackle a $10 billion deficit while cutting taxes, restore lost transportation options, and rebuild our community post-Sandy.”

“Assemblywoman Malliotakis has a unique perspective on what it’s like to represent the residents of a large city at the state level. We look forward to her insight on whether metropolitan areas deserve more autonomy from other levels of government,” said Alma Blount, director of the Hart Leadership Program. “Nicole certainly made her name for herself through leadership in her district after being hit so hard by Hurricane Sandy. She has a bright future and we’re excited to hear her views.”

Previous participants include, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Tallahassee City Commissioner Andrew Gillum, New Jersey State Senator Jennifer Beck and then-Mayor, now-Senator Cory Booker.
