Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I,Ref-Brooklyn, Staten Island), NYPD Officers Howard and Orellana, and NYPD K-9 Officers Atticus and Mia gave a K-9 Unit presentation to students of P.S. 8 Friday, April 12.

Students learned about the NYPD’s K-9 Unit and its operations. The presentation gave students the opportunity to learn about the training the dogs undergo and the important role they play in helping officers perform specific duties. This year’s K-9 Mia, was named after P.O. Miosotis Familia who was assassinated in 2018. Both dogs are three years old and graduated Emergency Service K-9 School in December 2017.

“This event, Sponsored by Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis was a wonderful and informative program for our students. They learned about the importance of the NYPD K-9 Unit and how they help the community on a daily basis,” said Principal Lisa Esposito.

“The NYPD K-9 Unit is a remarkable program. Each year, I hope this demonstration gives the children an understanding and appreciation for our police officers and their working dogs, as I find it important to teach children at an early age to respect our police officers and be kind to animals,” said Malliotakis.
