Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I, Ref – Staten Island/Brooklyn) announced today that she will once again join with the Verrazano Kiwanis Club, her alma mater New Dorp High School’s Key Club, as well as elementary school students from PS 8 and Ps24 to clean up National Parks Service properties in her district that are heavily affected by littering. The first joint cleanup of the year will take place Saturday, April 13th from 12:00pm to 3:00pm on New Dorp Lane along Miller Field and will be followed by a May cleanup along Hylan Boulveard outside Gateway National Recreation Area in Bay Terrace. Volunteers from the community are welcome to participate.

Although Malliotakis has held cleanups with National Parks Service many times while serving in the State Assembly, this is only the second year of her partnership with the Verrazano Kiwanis Club and New Dorp High School Key Club. National Parks Service is often short-staffed at the beginning of the season and need help due to the large amount of trash accumulated during the winter months.

The Assemblywoman welcomes the addition of volunteers of all ages: “As a New Dorp High School alum and someone who goes into schools with the Department of Sanitation to talk about recycling and anti-littering efforts, it brings me great joy to engage New Dorp’s students as well as younger volunteers from PS 8 and PS 24 to join us in cleaning up our parks. Litter is a major complaint island-wide and constantly needs to be addressed. These ‘Spring cleaning’ events are a great example of different generations working together to tackle an issue in our community and I’m very proud to take part in them.”

Jen Nersesian, National Parks Services Superintendent said “We look forward to partnering with Assemblywoman Malliotakis and the Staten Island community to help keep Miller Field clean as we gear up for the warm weather and the start of our spring sports season.”

“Cleanup season is upon us and the Verrazano Kiwanis Club is proud to help Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, along with New Dorp High School’s Kiwanis Key Club, PS 24 and PS 8 students give back the to the community and help our young boys and girls fulfill their community service hours,” added Verrazano Kiwanis President Joe Bertone.

National Parks Service will be providing cleanup tools and protective gear, so all those wishing to join please call the office of Assemblywoman Malliotakis at 718-987-0197 to ensure they bring enough supplies.

KEEP UP WITH NICOLE
